PAPAL NUNCIO TO LAUNCH JPII AWARD IN TRAMORE
The Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Charles Brown, will be in Tramore this coming Friday, 3 October, to officially launch the Pope John Paul II Award in the diocese of Waterford and Lismore.
For the past twelve months, The Pope John Paul II Award has run this award in the Diocese and over 100 students will receive their medals and certificate of achievement from Archbishop Brown at the official launch.
The Award was one of the last initiatives Bishop William Lee asked to have in the Diocese before his retirement last October. Run in many dioceses across the country over the last few years, The Pope John Paul II Award is a program, which encourages our young people to get involved in their community and parish, and as part of our parish commitment to enhancing the lives of our young people on their journey through faith.
The four schools and parishes involved in first year of the award were C.B.S Tramore, Stella Maris, Tramore, Coláiste Dún Lascaigh, Cahir and Blackwater School in Lismore & Cappoquin parishes.
Diocesan coordinator, Fr. Michael Toomey, said he was literally ‘astounded’ at the enthusiasm and commitment all students have given and put into this award. “When people ask me– ‘where are the young people in our church?’ I can now say that they are just outside the door and waiting to be invited in!”
Fr. Michael added: “The feedback from the students has been so open and honest that it makes very good reading for priests, parish councils and schools in how to get their enthusiasm and energy back into the church. This award helps everyone to do that.”
The award allows students to assist in many parish and community ministries, and they in turn gain many experiences and talents, which enhance their spiritual and personal development.
The award has been set up with the kind and generous support of the Knights of St Columbanus.
The Papal Nuncio will visit the new secondary school in Tramore, Ardscoil Na Mara, before the award launch at 12noon in Holy Cross Church on Friday 3 October 2014. Everyone welcome.
