PARISH TRIP TO SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO

Many of our parishioners are heading off this week to visit the home and places of Padre Pio.

We begin in Piana Romana which is where Jesus and Mary appeared to Padre Pio and gave him wounds of Christ, the Stigmata.

There will be Mass in the Cathedral of Benevento, where Padre Pio was ordained. We will then take the coach to Pietrelcina, where we will have a walking tour. We see the friary built on the exact spot where Padre Pio prophesied it would one-day stand. We visit St. Pio’s family home and the church of St. Anna where Padre Pio was baptised and received his First Holy Communion. We also visit the church where he celebrated his first mass as a newly ordained priest.

We will then travel on to San Giovanni Rotondo and visit the Capuchin Friary, the cell where Saint Pio lived and died, the crucifix before which he received the stigmata and the old and new churches. We will also visit also Padre Pio’s tomb and the English Office, which was established to help the vast number of English speaking pilgrims visiting San Giovanni Rotondo, and Mass will be celebrated at the shrine.

There is also Mass during our visit to Monte Sant’Angelo, the shrine in the cave where the Archangel Michael appeared in the 5th Century. A long list of Saints and Popes have visited this cave to pray to the Archangel, among them St. Francis and Padre Pio. There will also be a guided tour of Padre Pio’s hospital and have Mass.

If you would like any personal intentions or intentions for loved ones offered at our Masses asking for St Pio’s intercession, please feel free to leave these in the box by Padre Pio’s statue, the Parish office or sacristy, or to any of the priests, by Wednesday 2 April. Fr Michael will pray those intentions at the Masses we celebrate on the pilgrimage.
