Newsletter 21st September 2025 – 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection:

St. Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925)

Pier Giorgio Frassati, born on April 6, 1901, in Turin, Italy. The son of a prominent newspaper owner and politician, Frassati developed a deep faith and compassion for the poor that often contradicted his family’s secular outlook. He balanced his studies in mining engineering with an active spiritual life of daily Mass attendance, and extensive charitable work through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Frassati was known for his joyful demeanour, love of outdoor activities, and ability to inspire faith in his peers.
At the heart of Frassati’s spirituality was a deep love for the Eucharist and a commitment to daily prayer. Despite growing up in a family where faith was not strongly emphasised, Frassati developed a deep spiritual life that he was never embarrassed to share with his friends. He encouraged others to adopt the same devotion to the Eucharist for themselves, saying, “I urge you with all the strength of my soul to approach the Eucharistic Table as often as possible. Feed on this Bread of the Angels from which you will draw the strength to fight inner struggles.”
Frassati’s prayer life was not confined to church walls. He found God’s presence in the beauty of nature, particularly in the mountains he loved to climb. For Frassati, the grandeur of creation was a constant reminder of God’s greatness and an invitation to contemplation. Frassati’s spirituality was more than merely contemplative. He embodied Christ’s love in action and led a life oriented towards service. His charitable works were extensive and often sacrificial and secret. He would give away his bus fare or even his own coat to those in need. He would also frequently forego family vacations to stay behind to care for the poor, serving them with genuine friendship and respect, recognising their inherent dignity.
One of the most striking aspects of Frassati’s spirituality was his irrepressible joy. He was known for his sense of humour, love of practical jokes, and ability to make faith attractive to his peers. This joy stemmed from a deep trust in God’s love. 
Frassati died of polio on July 4, 1925. On the eve of his death, with a paralyzed hand he scribbled a message to a friend, asking him to take the medicine needed for injections to be given to Converso, a poor sick man he had been visiting. His doctors later speculated that the young man had caught polio while serving the sick. Pier Giorgio’s funeral was a triumph. The streets of the city were lined with a multitude of mourners who were unknown to his family – the poor and the needy whom he had served so unselfishly for seven years. The unexpected crowd who mourned him was what revealed to his family the true extent of deep convictions, faith, and service of others. It not only brought his father to the faith but also saved the strained marriage of his parents. 
 
On September 7th, 2025, Pier Giorgio was declared a Saint by Pope Leo XVI along with St. Carlo Acutis. Two new Saints; beautiful role models for the youth of the world.

National Coffee Morning in aid of The Waterford Hospice

The National Coffee Morning in aid of The Waterford Hospice will be held at the Majestic Hotel on Thursday morning 25th September at 11.00 o’clock.
We have had wonderful Coffee Mornings at this venue and look forward to another enjoyable morning.
There will be a raffle also with very nice prizes.
All monies raised here will be donated to Waterford Hospice.
