REFLECTION:
Reflection for 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Losing and Finding Giving up is part of life – you give up your time and money for your children and grandchildren. Parents say it was worth it for the joy in their faces. A person goes to work for the poor and gives up a better job. You want to do more study and know you have to leave some leisure aside that you like. In sport we sacrifice a lot to train and to do well. But something else comes through for us when we give up. If it’s real and true we get back a lot.
It seems strange for Jesus to say – lose your life to save it. He’s talking about losing good things, to get better. This can be a big challenge in a culture today that is very ‘me’ conscious. We can find that personal concerns take total precedence, without enough care for others. But as long as one person on this globe is hungry or homeless or seeking refuge, the work of Jesus is never done.
Losing life and saving life with Jesus is a call to community, to neighbourhood and the world, to make our part of the world a better place. My own life may be my main concern, my circle of care may extend just as far as myself, ignoring care in a sustained way for the stranger or the outcast, then I am called to the challenge of the gospel to lose selfishness, and find the generosity given in my heart by God.
Think ahead to today or this week. Offer love and service to God. Lord, teach me to be generous in your service.

Our Lady’s Church, Carbally Bicentenary Celebration
2024 marks the two hundredth anniversary of Carbally Church. Records show that a plot of land was donated by Lord Hugh Fortescue (Earl Ebrington) for a new Chapel to be built. There is no exact date for the building of the present Chapel but conflicting records sight 1823/24 – 1830. However, in April of 1824, in the then published ‘Waterford Mail’ Newspaper, an acknowledgement details Lord Fortescue’s generosity by Fr. Edward Colbert CC, on behalf of Fr. Nicholas Phelan, Parish Priest of Tramore.
The Parish Pastoral Council of Carbally Church have organised a special celebration to mark this bicentenary on Wednesday September 25th at 7.30pm. Bishop Cullinan will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving in Carbally, to be followed with a reception at our local community centre. On their behalf, I invite all our parishioners and friends to join us for this celebration.
We look forward to this occasion marking two hundred years of faith, while allowing ourselves the opportunity to reflect on not only what has been but what hopefully will be for the future of Carbally Church and its parishioners.

Holy Cross Cemetery
The upkeep of our cemetery demands constant work, care and commitment. In recent times, with much expense and assistance, we have begun to get the grounds under control and reflecting the importance space that it is. As we continue with our efforts, we ask the help of all who tend their family graves in Holy Cross Cemetery or who have others doing work on their behalf in the graveyard.
Please take home all unwanted flowers, pots, trinkets, and other items. We ask too that any extra topsoil not be dumped around our grounds but to be disposed of properly. The regular dumping of unwanted soil and other items is making the care of our cemetery all the harder. I ask for it now to please stop. The care of every grave but also the grounds, are of equal importance.
I thank you for your understanding and assistance in this matter.
Fr. Richard
